ALQST invites you to share your responses to the life and work of Alaa Al-Siddiq, an icon of the Emirati human rights movement and ALQST’s former Executive Director, whose tragic death in June 2021 left a huge void in the hearts of the many whose lives she touched.
Alaa was known for her passionate and devoted efforts in support of human rights and worthy causes, at great personal cost. She left her homeland, the United Arab Emirates, to fight for human rights after her father was arbitrarily imprisoned.
She was not only a powerful rights advocate but also had many interests and talents, including poetry and art. Above all, Alaa was a friend, colleague and sister to all of those around her, always doing what she could to help others.
About the competition:
In honour of Alaa, ALQST is inviting members of the public in the UAE and the Gulf generally, as well as the international human rights community, to share creatively their responses to her inspiring life, struggles for justice, and the immense legacy she leaves behind. These could take the form of drawings, posters, poetry, photographs, creative writing or work in any other medium.
To enter, please submit your contribution to alaaunit@alqst.org by Monday 13 June 2022. There will be a small prize for the one(s) we like best – the judges’ decision will be final – but every contribution will be received with gratitude. The winner(s) will be announced at a conference in Alaa’s honour to be held on Monday 20 June 2022.
